Even with the butchered woman haunting his thoughts, the cool pre-shower air buffeting his face was doing wonders to K’s mood. He felt unstoppable, on top of the world, beyond the reach of ghouls that materialized out of thin air – because air itself was nothing but a stagnation that needed his speed, his vigour to be stroked to motion. He breezed past the gynaecological clinic where an infant’s body had once been discovered at day-break, right beside the gate – an assortment of body-parts, to be precise, the grisly workmanship of a depraved killer, the incident that had perturbed the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood.
But he was past that in a jiffy, blowing warm exhaust in the face of an atmosphere that still seemed to retain some of the remnants of those cold wee hours of the morning when an unhinged killer had been busy with his knife or hacksaw.
The next crossing was another exercise in screeching of tyres, shifting of gears, and a gunning of the throttle in a daredevil manoeuvre that bore testimony to his pent-up frustration of the past one day - or whatever period of time it had been. He was riding along Elgin Road now, the name popping out of nowhere, the highbrow official buildings on both sides helplessly watching him break all caps on speed. Some glass ceiling, that one. He imagined doing it in the old, real days when a traffic cop’s club would cut short every speed-loving freak in mid-adventure, hauling him up for rigorous questioning with a bucket-load of expletives that made cheeky whores out of the speedster’s woman relatives; an inevitable snatching of the driving license would ensue, with bleak hopes of recovery.
He wasn’t old enough for a motor-bike then, but he was now, and he felt himself representing all the roadies that harboured dreams of wrecking every barrier that hard-nosed, look-down-upon-everyone, deep-pocketed, grease-palmed executives had ever caused to put up on this sulphurous-lighted stretch of tarmac.
He throttled even harder, the trees lining the road whizzing past him in a blur. But for the girl, his hands might have left the handle-bars for a brief celebration, two middle fingers cutting through the air for the benefit of every ghost of a cop that might be watching. Hell, he could bring one to life right here, couldn’t he, but he doubted whether it would be fun.
The girl hadn’t spoken a word since their precipitate escape, but he had heard suppressed cries at knife-edge turns and friction-defying twists and sideways-dips that must have been gruelling for any pillion. Selfish me, he thought, slowing down. Even in the thrum and vroom of the engine, he could have sworn to a sigh of relief issuing from behind. Such a discord in their thinking: sensual thighs scissoring his girth on his mind, prayers for the breakneck pace to whittle down on hers; visions of juicy boobs pressing on to his back scudding across the screen of his brain, swear words cursing the day he was born on hers.
